RCMP Alberta - On May 25, 2018 at approximately 10:21 p.m., Chestermere RCMP responded to a collision on Chestermere Boulevard West of Rainbow Road involving two vehicles. A Sedan occupied by a family of three from Chestermere was travelling East on Chestermere Boulevard when another Westbound Sedan occupied by a Calgary man and his two children crossed the center line which caused a collision. One woman from the Eastbound sedan was taken to hospital, two children from the Westbound sedan were taken to Calgary Children's Hospital for assessment, the remainder of the involved persons were assessed and released on site.
The investigation determined the driver of the Westbound sedan was intoxicated and had exhibited an erratic driving pattern as reported minutes before the collision. The driver of the Westbound sedan was arrested on scene for Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle and taken back to the Chestermere RCMP detachment where he subsequently failed to provide suitable breath samples. As a result, a 43 year old Calgary man was released to appear in Strathmore Provincial Court on charges of Operation of a Motor Vehicle while Impaired, and Failure to Provide a Suitable Sample of Breath. The matter remains under investigation which may result in further charges.
Chestermere RCMP remains committed to road safety in our community and will continue to focus efforts on impaired, distracted, and aggressive drivers. Roving check stops and enhanced patrols will continue throughout the year in an effort to detect and deter drivers dangerous to the public. Chestermere RCMP would like to encourage motorists to continue reporting suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 when it's safe to do so with a license plate number, description of the vehicle and driver; and direction of travel.
