Police Chase and Car Jacking Attempt Ends In Arrest

RCMP Alberta - On June 1, 2018 the Gleichen, Bassano and Strathmore RCMP detachments responded to a complaint of a suspicious vehicle which escalated into a "car jacking attempt" and a multi jurisdictional pursuit on Highway 1. Evading police efforts, the offending vehicle was observed to travel in excessive speeds and in the opposite lane of traffic forcing other vehicles off the roadway.

Locating the suspect outside of his vehicle near 13 mile corner, the Gleichen RCMP interrupted the subject trying to steal another vehicle with violence. Selasie Onegus Turner of Casselberry, Florida was arrested for Flight from Police and Robbery with an Offensive Weapon. Preliminary investigation revealed that Turner’s vehicle recently illegally entered Canada at a border crossing near Val Marie, Saskatchewan on May 31st, 2018 and was the subject of a multi Provincial police chase until the vehicle was lost near Redcliff, Alberta.

Turner has been charged out of the Gleichen and Strathmore RCMP for Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Resist Arrest, Robbery with an Offensive Weapon and Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

Remanded into police custody, Turner is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court in Strathmore on June 5th, 2018. Other aspects of this investigation are ongoing with assistance from CBSA, the Integrated Border Enforcement Team and U.S. law enforcement agencies.
